  • Togo : the energy sector is positioning itself

Creation of a new thermal power plant, installation of solar power plants, the energy sector in Togo is characterized today by several projects initiated and executed across the country to enable Togo to reach the 2030 agenda of the United Nations which advocates universal access to energy sources.

Energy occupies a prominent place in the National Development Plan (PND 2018-2022) in its axis 2 which advocates the development of the energy sector to contribute effectively to the improvement of agricultural, industrial and mining production.

Several projects including:

  • the construction of the Adjarala dam (Togo / Benin) for a power of 147 MW and an estimated total cost of 450 million euros;
  • the introduction by international competition of concessions to independent producers;
  • the installation of new production units;
  • the project for the rehabilitation of the Kpimé hydroelectric power station;
  • the project of valorization of the micro hydroelectric sites inventoried on the principal rivers;
  • the construction of solar power plants; the rehabilitation of the Nangbeto dam;
  • the sub-regional project for the construction of a combined cycle natural gas thermal power station by 2020;
  • the capacity building of the isolated power stations of the Electric Power Company of Togo (CEET) ,are already running or running

We also note the good performances of the Togolese Rural Renewable Energies Agency (AT2ER) . Indeed, the Agency is continuing the field work with the aim of increasing the rate of rural electrification from 7% to 40% by 2020, and to provide electricity to 300,000 households within 5 years, that is 2 million additional inhabitants. It is also striving to create 5 training centers specialized in solar energy in the 5 regions of Togo.

With the electrification strategy launched in July 2018, Togo through the CIZO project which aims in the long term the electrification of more than 2 million Togolese, via individual solar photovoltaic kits, opens to private investments in the energy field. more precisely in the solar.

In 2018, nearly 10,000 homes were electrified by BBOXX (a British company specializing in the marketing of solar solutions by individual kit). In the end, the figures of BBOXX associated with those of CEET bring to more than 45% the rate of access to electricity in Togo.

To boost the energy sector and satisfy the needs of the population, the construction of a new 65 MW thermal power plant in Lomé has also been launched. This structuring and strategic project responds to the dual will of the government to promote the national economy and to cope with the ever increasing demand for electrical energy.

The “Kekeli” power plant will therefore serve the development of Togo as a whole and will provide additional electrical energy for the equivalent of 263,000 Togolese households.

The most dynamic sector in 2018, between the CIZO presidential initiative, the national electrification strategy, the “Kekeli ” thermal power plant , the ramp-up of natural gas, Togo’s energy sector is now opening up to private investment in terms of production, import-export, marketing, transportation and distribution of energy.
